San Carlos gets a boost from DTI for mango processing
SAN CARLOS CITY- The city government is set to revive and promote its claim as the source of the sweetest mangoes in the world after it received a P2 million grant from the Department of Trade & Industry for the procurement of equipment to be used for the processing of dried mangoes, pastillas and puree.
The city government will provide P1 million as counterpart fund.
A by-product of the processing is the conversion of the pieces of the mango peel as feeds for ruminants such as cattle, goats, pigs, and even the worm African night crawlers that produce organic fertilizer.
Housewives have started undergoing a two-day training on mango processing by trainers from the Department of Science & Technology (DOST).
The city’s Cooperative and Agriculture offices will supervise this project’s operations. The initial location for the plant will be at the Agriculture Office, SACAFEFA section (San Carlos Federation of Farmers). Independent mango producers can use the equipment for a fee. (CIO/ Hilda Austria)
