Escapee shot dead after lobbing grenade at cops
ONE of the two detention prisoners of the provincial jail in Lingayen who escaped last June 1 was shot dead by policemen who went to arrest him at his hiding place in Sitio Tabacalera, Barangay Pantal, Dagupan City at 3:30 p.m. after he lobbed a grenade but failed to explode.
P/Supt. Christopher Abrahano, chief of the Dagupan police, identified the dead escapee as Ronnie Zarate, 27, of Barangay Ambonao in Calasiao, who was found hiding in the house of his girlfriend in Pantal some 20 days after he escaped.
Zarate, together with one Rogelio Garcia Jr., 41, of San Miguel, Calasiao, escaped at 6:00 a.m. of June 1, 2015 when they stormed the gate and ganged up on two guards of the provincial jail.
Garcia was arrested on the same day in San Carlos City when a for-hire van the two allegedly rented detected that his passengers were escapees from the provincial jail, so he stopped his vehicle right in front of the San Carlos City police station where he asked for help.
Zarate managed to escape in that incident and reportedly went to see his girlfriend at their house in Dagupan City where he stayed till his presence in the area was detected.
The team from the Dagupan Police and Provincial Jail personnel proceeded to his hideout but when Zarate saw them approaching, he lobbed a fragmentation grenade at them but it did not explode.
Policemen and jail personnel opened fire on Zarate in retaliation, hitting him in different parts of his body. He was, rushed to the Region 1 Medical Center where he was pronounced dead by an attending physician.
Zarate was in detention for the crimes of carnapping with murder and multiple carnapping. (Leonardo Micua)
