FISHING INDUSTRY THREATENED

DASOL—The town’s mayor is seeking help of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) to regulate the loading of minerals from neighboring town of Infanta that threatens Dasol’s fishing industry.

Mayor Noel Nacar said in a forum attended by BFAR Director Asis Perez that while the town has no ordinances regulating fish cages and mining, yet the sustainability of its fishing industry is seriously threatened by mining activities in Infanta town.

Mr. Nacar reported that rejected poor quality minerals transported through the pier in Infanta are being dumped in the coastal area. Dasol and Infanta are neighboring coastal towns.

He said they have observed depleting fish catch because of the practice.

He said they have no control over sea vessels from Zambales that collect the minerals from a pier in Infanta.

He added that the noise pollution created by the equipment used by the vessels at night keeps residents awake.

“We are asking the help of BFAR to please to stop or regulate this to protect our fishing industry,” he Mr. Nacar said. (Tita Roces)
