Dagupan addressing issue of student truancy

MAYOR Belen T. Fernandez met members of the Local Council for the Protection of Children (LCPC) last June 15 in an effort to address the issues of truancy, internet and computer addiction among students.

Fernandez said that she wants students to focus on their studies and the LCPC with the help of teachers and parents collectively addressing one of the biggest issues confronting the youth: internet and computer addiction among students even as young as 7 years old.

One major cause of truancy is the operation of 75 licensed internet cafes and computer gaming shops operating in the city.

It has been observed that minors, most of them in school uniforms, are seen in internet cafes during school hours.

Consequently, the LCPC came up with the following measures to address truancy:
1. Provide computer shops with copy of Ordinance No.1815-2004 and DepEd Order No. 86 which prohibits students from entering computer shops during school hours.

2. Enforce provisions of the ordinance on erring computer shops owners as well as remind them of the corresponding administrative and legal remedies for non-compliance.

3. Form an Inspection Team or Task Force.

4. Require all student of minor age who enters computer shops to present school ID and class schedule.
