INTERNATIONAL CAMPAIGN

LINGAYEN – Pangasinan’s second chess International Master (IM), Haridas Pascua, may yet be the province’s chess Grand Master before the year ends if he succeeds in his campaign in August.

Pascua of Mangatarem town, is the province’s second IM after 57 years. The first Pangasinense chess IM was the late Rodolfo Tan Cardoso, an ASNA awardee.

Pascua will compete in the Asian Continental Chess Championships on August 1-13 at Al Ain United Arab Emirates, and Abu Dhabi Chess Fest on August 23-31.

Meanwhile, Women FIDE Masters Samantha Glo Revita of Rosales and Cherry Ann Mejia of San Fabian, together with Prince Mark Aquino of San Nicolas, will join the Philippine delegation to the 16th ASEAN Age Group Chess Championships slated on June 8-17 at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore.

The trio will play against young chess players in Southeast Asia in three categories namely: blitz (played in 5 minutes), rapid (played from 25-30 minutes) and standard (the highlight of a chess competition which is played in 3 hours).

Sison pointed out that Pangasinenses continue to rule the chess competition of the Region 1 Athletic Association (R1AA) Meet and even collecting more recognition in the Luzon Leg of Batang Pinoy, a sports development program by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) that is supported by the province.

Juan Vicente Sison, Pangasinan Chess League (PCL) president, credited Gov. Amado T. Espino, Jr. for hosting the chess clinics and regular competitions that helped Pascua and other young chess players hone their skills.

“All efforts exerted by Governor Espino to promote chess at the grassroots level in Pangasinan have paid off,” Sison stressed in an interview as he cited the sterling performances of Revita, Mejia and other local chess sensations. (PIO)
