FIGHTING criminality and crime syndicates in Dagupan City shifts to high gear with the recent installation of 11 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in strategic areas in the central business district.

The operation of the CCTV cameras have been undergoing initial testing since last May 15.

Supt. Christopher Abrahano, chief of the Dagupan City Police Station (DCPS), the CCTV cameras will help the police calibrate and trigger specific faster responses depending on the location of perpetrators and nature of crime being committed in real time.

“The footages can be used in the identification of persons or vehicles involved in reported crimes,” said Abrahano.

Five more CCTV cameras will be installed next month.

Abrahano said the monitoring of the CCTV footages is a shared responsibility among the DCPS, Public Alert Response and Monitoring Center (PARMC) and the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC).

“Although the main control is in the PARMC office, we have deployed a police personnel there and it is being monitored 24/7”, said Abrahano.

“Our city mayor hopes to install more cameras in the entire business district and in the busy streets and highways of the city”, he added.

Meanwhile, the DCPS is also encouraging business establishments to install their own CCTV cameras as provided in the city ordinance no. 2013-2014.

Abrahano said they are tasked to furnish all establishments in the city covered by this ordinance with a copy for strict compliance.

“This is for their own good as CCTV cameras nowadays are very helpful”, said Abrahano. (Hilda Austria)
