Roxas Pasalubong: Fish finder for fisherfolk

THERE’S finally an easier way to catch more fish in Dagupan City’s coastal water, thanks to modern technology.

If people can navigate their way through strange streets and highways to get to their final destination, so can fishermen navigate to where the schools of fish are!

The 19 groups of fishermen that each received a fish-finder gadget with global positioning system (GPS) are now excited over the prospect of catching more fish out in the sea, which translates to bigger profits.

According to Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas who turned over the gadgets last Friday to be installed in 19 fishing boats earlier provided by the city, the fish-finder measures the depth of location of groups of fish in an area.

GPS-TECHNOLOGY

GPS TECHNOLOGY FOR FISHERMEN – DILG Sec. Mar Roxas and Dagupan City Belen Fernandez prepare to distribute the fish-finder kits to the fisherfolk during the visit of Sec. Roxas to the city.

Roxas was joined in the turnover rites by city officials led by Dagupan City Mayor Belen Fernandez, Rep. Gina de Venecia and her husband former, House Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr and former Third District Rep. Rachel Arenas.

“Because it has GPS, it points to the direction and areas where fishermen should go to throw their nets,” Emma Molina, city agriculturist, said.

The battery-operated device (with a screen monitor) on board thrown to the deep and monitors movement of the fishes.

Once a school of fish is detected, it registers on the screen and the GPS automatically provides the direction to the fishes’ location.

The 19 boats were financed jointly by the Department of Agriculture (75 percent) and the city government (25 percent) under the Bottom-Up-Budgeting scheme.

The amount spent for the 19 boats was P2.8-million from DA and P750,000 from the city government.

The GPS fish-finder gadget costs around P39,000 each.

Molina said Dagupan City is the first to use this through government funding”. (Tita Roces)
