A RISSO’S dolphin, suspected to have a problem with its sonar communication, was turned over by the local government of Sual to the National Integrated Fisheries and Technology Development Center (NIFTDC) on Wednesday.

Westly Rosario, director of NIFTDC, a research branch of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), said the dolphin was seen stranded in the coast of Sual by residents and unable to swim back to the sea.

Rosario explained the sea creature might be having a sonar communication problem, a sound dolphins make to detect their location.

“It (dolphin) does not have any bruises or cuts but until Thursday, it is still disoriented and not in its proper swimming position”, said Rosario.

He said they put the mammal in a hammock so that it will be able to breath and not

drowned considering its improper position. “The challenge later on is on how we will feed it”, he said. (Hilda Austria)
