Nine ASNA Awardees honored
AGEW NA PANGASINAN
LINGAYEN – Governor Amado T. Espino, Jr. led the officialdom of the province in paying tribute to nine outstanding sons and daughters of Pangasinan as this year’s ASNA awardees on the 435thAgew na Pangasinan celebration.
The 2015 ASNA awardees were honored during the ASNA awards night and grand ball held at the Sison Auditorium on April 10.
The awardees were: Rebecca Bustamante (Entrepreneurship), Dr. Cecilia Daranciang (Culture and Arts), Dr. Perla Legazpi (Public Administration), Ana Marie Pamintuan (Journalism), Victor Ramos (Environment), Emilio Estrella Sanglay, Jr. (Music), Dr. Vivencio Villaflor, MD (Humanitarian and Civic Leadership) and Dr. Francisco Viray (Corporate Leadership) and Rev. Fr. Agerico “Jeremy” Orbos, SVD (Spiritual Leadership).
A special recognition award for public service was also presented to Atty. Hermogenes Pobre, a distinguished career public official married to a Pangasinense from Lingayen.
Bustamante, a native of Dasol town, worked at an early age as a vendor, a janitress in a bank, and a domestic helper for a Singaporean family, became the president of her own executive recruitment firm and president and co-founder of one of the largest business events companies in Southeast Asia.
A daughter of Mangatarem town, Dr. Daranciang is an educator with doctorate in three fields of philosophy, and a lecturer in big universities here and abroad. Now 85, she writes books focusing on Pangasinan’s history, culture and arts.
Dr. Legazpi, also from Mangatarem, is a commissioner of the Pangasinan Historical and Cultural Commission (PHCC) who contributed to the extensive research for the founding day of Pangasinan.
Pamintuan, editor-in-chief of the Philippine Star, whose paternal grandmother is from Mangatarem town, received an award for excellence in journalism during UP’s centennial celebration in 2008.
Ramos of San Nicolas town served as undersecretary of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) under the late former President Corazon Aquino and DENR secretary of former President Fidel Ramos.
Sanglay, from Bautista town, is considered the Father of Neo-Ethnic Music in the Philippines by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA). His greatest contribution to the music industry is the introduction of the popularization of neo-ethnic rock in the 1970s through his band, Pen Pen.
Villaflor, named “Most Outstanding Physician in Pangasinan” by the Philippine Medical Association in 1979, is the founder of Dagupan Doctors Villaflor Memorial Hospital, now considered to be the best provider of advanced medical care north of Manila.
Viray of Lingayen was named Secretary of the Department of Energy (DOE) during the Ramos administration, was one of the founding members of UP Palaris Confraternity, a brotherhood and sisterhood group of Pangasinan students studying in UP.
Tracing his roots in San Carlos City, Rev. Fr. Orbos, is now the mission director of the Society of the Divine Word (SVD) Mission Philippines who takes care of the needs of Filipino SVD missionaries working overseas and spearheads the promotion of mission awareness.
Pobre, former chairman of Professional Regulation Commission Chairman and now president and publisher of Manila Bulletin Publishing Corporation and vice chairman of Manila Hotel, spent 26 years in the academe, serving the University of the Philippines (UP), University of the East (UE) and the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP).
“It is true that long before the advent of globalization which weigh excellence as the only known performance, there were already achievers among our province mates who have settled for nothing less than doing their best for their chosen fields of endeavor, Gov. Espino stressed during the awards night as he commended the ASNA honorees who he considered ‘a cut above the rest’ and ‘sources of inspiration to the youth.’
