Conjoined twins successfully separated
HELPED BY TZU CHI FOUNDATION, PANDA
CONJOINED twins, Jerrlyn and Jennylyn De Guzman from Bautista town were successfully separated in an operation held in Taipei City, organized and sponsored by the Tzu Chi Foundation last March 13.
Ludy De Guzman, mother of the twins, said the foundation fully took care of the twins and prepared them for the operation that took place three days after their arrival in Taipei.
“On February 21, a tissue expander was given to them (twins) and on March 13 they underwent the operation”, said De Guzman.
The twins and their parents finally arrived in the country last April 8.
Mario Lim, president of PANDA DFCCA Fire Brigade Volunteers said the group was happy with the results of the operation.
“Later on, they will be able to walk separately”, he said referring to the twins who are now one year and four months old.
Ludy de Guzman, mother of twins Jerrlyn and Jennylyn, share a light moment with officials of the Tzu Chi Foundation and Panda DFFCA in reaction to the twin’s antics during the press conference.
Lim endorsed the De Guzman twins’ case to the Tzu Chi Foundation after their condition was featured in a national TV last January 2014. Lim and his group communicated regularly with the foundation on the condition of the twins via Skype.
After the Tzu Chi Philippines volunteers immediately responded and checked the condition of the twins and arranged the trip of the family to Taipei for the operation at the Tzu General Hospital.
“We will continue to support the twins even after their operation”, said Lim.
In an article published in Taiwan Tzu Chi Philippines website, the twins were described as “attached together at the bosom. They are part of the 33% of all conjoined twins around the world categorized as omphalopagus, who may share a liver, gastrointestinal or genitourinary functions”.
Meanwhile, De Guzman who was tearful when the family left the country was all smiles upon their return and expressed her gratitude to the people and groups who helped their twins live normal lives.
“My husband and I are very grateful to the Tzu Chi Foundation and the PANDA DFCCA volunteers for giving my daughters the opportunity to be separated and live normal lives because with our current status we will not afford the operation”, said De Guzman. (Hilda Austria)
