Dagupan leads SHS implementation

FOR LEAGUE OF CITIES

DAGUPAN City will facilitate the coordination and support for the implementation of the Senior High School (SHS) program for the League of Cities of the Philippines (LCP).

The designation of Dagupan City Mayor Belen Fernandez as focal person for the implementation of the SHS program was made during LCP’s National Executive Board Meeting last March 21.

Dagupan is one of 10 pilot cities for the City Leaders Project and SHS implementation.

Fernandez said that as the lead facilitator for the league, she has to coordinate and collaborate with the Department of Education (DepEd) and other national government agencies to ensure the effective implementation of the SHS program.

“It is imperative for city governments to actively support and participate in this initiative to reform our basic education curriculum,” Fernandez said. “We will be the first to reap the fruits of this program since an educated and skilled learner will be a productive member of our local communities,” she added.

Dagupan and other pilot cities have already undergone training and mentorship on SHS planning and budgeting, and have started organizing local multi-stakeholder task forces and securing national government allocation for SHS facilities.

The pilot cities are already holding discussions to source support for their respective SHS programs including school lot acquisition, additional facilities for technical-vocational tracks, and additional classrooms.

In Dagupan, based on the projected enrollment in 2016, 139 classrooms will have to be constructed in different schools in Dagupan since all eight national high schools, private schools, colleges and universities in the city will implement the program.

The SHS program is in line with Republic Act 10533 or the Expanded Basic Education Act of May 2013, that makes making kindergarten compulsory and adds two years of high school with different field specializations. (CIO)
