TWO SLAY ATTEMPTS

THE Pangasinan police remains clueless on the motive and identities of the mastermind and hired killers behind the attempted slaying of Assistant Provincial Health Officer Dr. Jeremy Rosario, ex-provincial board member, March 11 in Manaoag town.

P/Supt. Ferdinand de Asis, spokesman of the Pangasinan Police, said the Special Investigation Task Group (SITG) Dr. Ming Rosario formed by Senior Supt. Reynaldo Biay, officer-in-charge of the Police Provincial Office, is still working on the case, although Rosario is now out of the hospital and given police security.

The Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) had invited the Philippine National Police (PNP)- Pangasinan to its Question Hour on Monday, March 23, to submit an update on the shooting of Dr. Rosario.

SP member Alfonso Bince Jr., who authored a resolution condemning the assault against Rosario, said he considers the shooting incident “alarming.”

Gov. Amado Espino Jr. also denounced the incident earlier and “directed the Provincial PNP to conduct thorough investigation and ensure that the identities of the people behind this cowardly act will be put behind bars.” said Espino.

BANIQUED SLAY ATTEMPT

De Asis revealed the slay attempt on Rosario is one of the two high-profile cases currently being investigated by the police in Pangasinan. The other is the slay attempt on Barangay Councilman Johnny Baniqued, 44, of Barangay IV in Dagupan City at about 9 p.m. last March 14, also by hitmen riding in tandem on motorcycle.

The police also formed a team headed by Supt. Christopher Abrahano, chief of police of Dagupan City, in to investigate the shooting incident.

Baniqued suffered gunshot wounds in his left chest and in the buttock and was rushed in serious condition at the Nazareth General Hospital. He however survived the incident and is now recuperating but placed under guard.

De Asis said police are checking on all angles in connection with the slay attempts on both Dr. Rosario and Baniqued.

In the case of Rosario, investigators are looking into his work as assistant provincial health officer in connection with his recommendation to file cases of violation of the anti-graft and corrupt practices act against the administrative officer and the cashier of the Manaoag Community Hospital.

Baniqued, also manager of a realty company, was seated in front of an eatery on Rivera Street in Dagupan, having a conversation with the owner of the canteen, when two men riding on a motorcycle approached and opened fire.

He was wounded in the first volley of fires but managed to run and hid himself under his car. One of the gunmen followed and shot him with Cal. 45 pistol while under the car. (Johanne Macob/Leonardo Micua)
