Barangays asked to watch out for bush fires

THE Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) of Pangasinan is on red alert watching out for forest fires and has appealed to barangay officials to help protect some 81,000 hectares of forest areas against possible grass fires especially this summer.

Leduina Co, PENRO head, said the Community Environment and Natural Resources Officers reiterate the agency’s concerns and plea for help when they met the barangay leaders last Thursday citing the agency’s lack of manpower, with only 14 forest rangers keeping watch.

Co expressed concern over the survival of the plants in the upland recently planted in the event a forest fire strikes.

She said while she is concerned about trees planted in lowland, she is more worried about those in the upland during summer.

There were bush/grass fires in the towns of Bugallon, San Manuel and Natividad last year that already destroyed many plants.

She warned about practice of communities that burn their wastes that if not carefully guarded could lead to forest fire in their areas.

She also called on picnickers to be careful when setting up fire to cook their meals when they go to the mountains or forests, by ensuring that coal embers are put out properly before leaving their picnic/camping areas. (Tita Roces)
