Art exhibit on women, by women
“SARAG MI,” an art exhibit showcasing the works of 16 young female artists in Pangasinan is ongoing at the Liongoren Gallery, Tapuac District in Dagupan City.
The exhibit, which opened last March 21 in celebration of the Women’s Month, features paintings centered on women by women visual artists who are members of BISKEG-Pangasinan Artist Collective, an association of homegrown artists based in Pangasinan.
Sarag Mi, a Pangasinense phrase which mean “we can,” is the group’s avenue to show their accomplishments as women artists, to the society.
One of the paintings is a portrait of Fang-od (Whang-od), the last tribal tattoo artist of Kalinga artist Geraldine Niña Llaneza. She said she chose Fang-od as her subject as the tattoo artist fits the art exhibit theme.
Llaneza, a Lingayen native, an advertising graduate of the University of Santo Tomas, added she was inspired by Fang-od’s humility and generosity to share what she can do to everyone.
Michelle Alegre, also a beauty queen from Bautista town, said their group wants to set an example and show to the world that women are strong and can equally do what men can.
She was the Philippine representative to South Korea for the Miss First Beauty World Pageant last year.
Gov. Amado T. Espino, Jr. pledged to support the group’s causes during the group’s courtesy call and urged its members to continue on honing their talent to serve as good examples to the community especially the youth.
Other women artists who shared their masterpieces were Kat Abenoja, Aileen Alcantara, Ana Theresa Bolos, Ma. Grace Carpizo, Aileen Espejo Dres, Kimberly Jane Golen, Rachel Anne Lacaba, Rosemarie Martinez, Rhen Najera, Lyantra Kryzelle Pasion, Kathrina Ragadi, Arvine Reyes, Vanessa Saclole, and Mariam Tumulto.
The art exhibit, which is considered as one of the best avenues for women who have artistic inclination to build a culture of literary development in what seemed to be an “art-hungry local scenery,” will run until April 16. (Johanne Macob/PIO)
