ON PNOY RESIGN MOVES

LINGAYEN—Get to the truth first before asking PNoy to resign.

This was the gist of the reaction of the president of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas to the moves of some sectors that also involved some bishops seeking the ouster of President Aquino.

He urged people seeking President Aquino’s resignation to search and determine the whole truth about his participation in the police operation that led to the deaths of 44 Special Action Force (SAF) commandos in Mamasapano, Maguindanao before jumping to conclusions.

While he said he has not read the Philippine National Police (PNP) Board of Inquiry (BOI) report on the Mamasapano incident, he said that “based on news releases, kailangan nating hanapin ang buong katotohanan kasi ‘yong mismong BOI report ay nagsasabi na marami silang dapat gawin na hindi pa nila nagagawa, maraming dapat kausapin na hindi pa nila narinig.”

He cited statements attributed to P/ Director Benjamin Magalong, head of the BOI, that he failed to interview President Benigno Aquino III before issuing the final BOI report.

“Therefore, the report is really incomplete… if it’s incomplete, ‘yong investigation work, then necessarily, magiging shaky ‘yong conclusion,” Villegas said.

Villegas then underscored that “justice is based on truth” and everyone should take part in the search for truth.

Lahat tayo dapat magtulungan, hindi lamang gobyerno, hindi lamang DOJ or Senate or Office of the President, lahat tayo bilang Pilipino, sapagkat lahat tayo namatayan,” he said.

He, however, clarified he respects the decision of his fellow bishops who voiced out their opinion that the President must step down. (Johanne Macob/Leonardo Micua)
