THE family of the Philippine National Police -Special Action Force trooper from San Nicolas town will receive full benefits from the government and more.

This was assured by Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas during his visit to the province on Monday.

The DILG secretary arrived in San Nicolas to condole with the family and relatives of the late PO2 Ephraim Garcia Mejia in Barangay Calaocan.

Mejia’s wife Miya and their two-year-old daughter July and Ephraim’s parents Warlito and Helen Mejia received Roxas at their home where a vigil was being observed.

Roxas said the government will grant them the death benefits which include gratuity equivalent to one year salary, monthly pension for five years equivalent to 80% of the deceased’s basic monthly pay, and burial expenses equivalent to three months basic salary.

Mejia’s child will also be given educational assistance from kindergarten to college.

Roxas assured the family that they will receive the benefits at the soonest possible time.

He handed P50,000 cash from the President’s special fund to Miya and offered to extend more help from the government that the family may require.

Miya said she hopes the government could help her build a house on a lot that her husband had purchased on which they planned to start building their house in April.

The parents also requested the Secretary to help in find employment for Miya as well as the transfer of assignment of Mejia’s brother Marco, who is in the Military and his sister Ruby, a teacher in Pasay City, to Luzon.

The Secretary said he would do all to grant the requests.

“I know that these benefits will never be enough and cannot compensate for the loss, but I hope it can somehow help,” Roxas told the family.

His remains was brought to the San Nicolas Municipal Hall where members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan presented a Resolution honouring his bravery. He was laid to rest at the municipal cemetery last Friday where he was honoured with a 21-gun salute. (PIA/vhs)
