THE Dagupan City government formally inaugurated a newly completed multi-purpose covered court last February 18 for the immediate use of the students of the East Central Integrated School (ECIS) and community activities of two barangays.

Mayor Belen T. Fernandez led the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the inauguration of the P4.9 million facility that demonstrates the city government’s resolve to improve infrastructure in public schools in the city.

Fernandez was joined by officials from ECIS, Department of Education (DepEd), Parent-Teachers Association, barangay council, and department heads from the local government.

The facility will benefit more than 2,000 students, as well as residents from both Barangays Herrero Perez and Mayombo.

The 704-square meter covered court will provide students a venue to gather and perform various school and extra-curricular activities protected from the heat of the sun or heavy rains.

Residents can also use the facility for barangay events and recreational programs, as well as serves as an evacuation center.

The flooring of the gymnasium was also elevated by almost a meter above flood level.

Dr. Renyardo Barrozo, ECIS principal, expressed his gratitude to the local government for providing the students with a modern facility that will serve as a “show window” or a model not just for the school, but for the whole community.

“I still cannot believe that this covered court, which was just a dream before, has finally become a reality. We are thankful to Mayor Fernandez for making this project possible for the benefit of the students.” said Barrozo.

Mayor Fernandez said that it has always been a priority of her administration to provide quality educational facilities in the city.

Fernandez recalled the time when during the school’s flag raising ceremony, students would rush to their classrooms after the rain started pouring. With the new covered court, the students can now be protected from the elements.

Fernandez added that plans are underway for the construction of a two-storey school building at East Central that will provide additional classrooms.

Meanwhile, construction is in full swing for two other covered courts at the North Central Elementary School in Bonuan Gueset and at the Bonuan Boquig Elementary School. #
