LNU-FQD Cobalts, new league champs

SEAOIL-NBTC ELITE LEAGUE

LAST week, the Lyceum-Northwestern University FQD Special Science High School (LNU-FQD) Cobalts overshadowed Pangasinan Universal Institute (PUI) Red Dragons in a spine-tingling encounter, 72-69, to emerge the champion in the 2014-2015 Seaoil-NBTC (National Basketball Training Center) Elite League in a knock-out game at the DWAD Gym.

The Cobalts trailed by four points at halftime with the score 28-33 but managed to spark a 15-8 blast to capture the lead at 43-41 with more than a minute remaining in the third canto which ended at 52-64.

In the final period, the Red Dragons rallied with a 17-3 run to grab the lead from the Cobalts, 69-67, with still 41 seconds left in the ball game. The Dragons’ efforts went to naught when they fumbled and committed successive turnovers and fouls that enabled the Cobalts to score five shots from the line and the former failed to recover since.

Elite League city commissioner Edilberto R. Abalos said LNU-FQD will face the champion of the Tarlac City leg of the League in a winner-take-all championship game on February 22 at 1:00 p.m., DWAD Gym. The winning team will compete in the league’s national championships, in Manila, in March.

Abalos also announced that the Elite League may be expanded to enable the teams of secondary schools in Urdaneta City and Alaminos to participate 1n the 2015-2016 season.

The Elite League is under the auspices of International Basketball Academy with National University Bulldogs coach as program director and Alex Compton, Alaska Aces coach, as national training director, and supported by the MVP Sports Foundation. – (Philamer C. Celi)
