Living the Chinese-Filipino culture

SINCE World War II, the country has since seen the evolution of a new Filipino generation immersed in the married culture of Philippines and China, principally in food, arts, business and trade.

Notably, many offsprings of couples with Chinese ancestry, born and raised in the culture of the Filipino have more than amply demonstrated that their education and environment prepared and enabled them to gain prominence in the realms of governance and economy.

It is only fitting therefore, that the government has adopted the Chinese New Year (also known as Spring Festival in native China) as an annual national holiday in recognition of the values contributed by the Chinese culture to the development of the country, and vice-versa to the evolution of a new generation with diverse interests that strengthens patriotism. After all, the festival adds another opportunity for families that have inter-married to host family dinner reunions.

The decision of the Dagupan City Council (at the prompting of Mayor Belen Fernandez, herself a prominent Chinoy), therefore, to stage the first Chinese Festival (February 7- March 5) is forward-looking as a cultural forum not only to strengthen ties between two cultures but to further boost economic prospects for trade and tourism in the city.

Don’t resign

CALLS for President Aquino to resign are all part of the democratic system and, thus, nothing wrong there.  The right to free speech is the backbone of democracy.

But the call for the President’s and the Vice President’s resignation in order to allow for a nebulous and dream-like advisory council to take over the reins of government is even more dangerous to say the least. This proposal by some sectors, including former Tarlac Rep. Peping Cojuangco, who is no less the President’s first-degree uncle, should be exposed for their own political agenda – to grab power through the backdoor.

If the group believes it can ride on the process that brought people to EDSA in 1986 and 2001 together, it is grossly mistaken. It cannot duplicate the two historical people power that unseated two presidents. It is illusionary to think that a series of protests in Luneta and EDSA that the group has announced will eventually lead to the country’s top leaders to resign. Sheer nonsense.

What the group is asking for is chaos, not the restoration of order in governance.
