UNDERSTANDING BIODIVERSITY

CALASIAO—More pupils in this town are certified to know how to plant and grow vegetable crops. Thanks to the School Children Field School (SCFS).

Last week, 182 pupils from Ambuetel Elementary School, Nagsaing Elementary School, and Lumbang Elementary School received their completion certificates of SCFS program, a joint program of the Philippine National IPM Program and the Agricultural Training Institute (ATI) with the Department of Education, patterned after the Farmers Field School, aimed at addressing biodiversity, climate change, and nutrition education.

The program is integrated in the school curriculum, in the subjects Science, Edukasyong Pantahanan at Pangkalusugan (EPP), and Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE).

The pupils participated in all the activities that accompanied the planting and production of vegetable crops, from bed preparation to harvesting, said ATI-Regional Training Center 1 (ATI-RTC 1) information officer, Maricel Dacapias.

“It is during the experience of caring for and cultivating their crops when the students learn the concepts of biodiversity, global warming, nutrition, integrated pest management and its impact on the immediate ecosystems and eventually to the environment as a whole,” Dacapias said.

The SCFS was first implemented in San Carlos City Division in June to October 2009.

The program was launched in Calasiao in 2013 at the Calasiao Central School, Quesban Elementary School, Malabago Elementary School, Macabito Elementary School, and Calasiao Comprehensive National High School.

Prior the project implementation, teachers who would handle the vegetable gardening subject underwent a Technical Training Course on sustainable vegetable production to enhance their technical skills.

The ATI-RTC 1 is envisioning to present the SCFS not only in San Carlos City or in Calasiao but to the rest of the province and region, Dacapias noted. – (Johanne R. Macob)
