Watch out for “Dagupan Certified” bangus
THE Dagupan bangus (milkfish), whether fresh or processed, will soon carry the seal “Dagupan Certified”, the mark of good quality product produced from the fish farms of Dagupan.
This after the city government decided to finally implement the branding of the Dagupan bangus (milkfish) to distinguish it from other bangus products produced in other areas and ensure consumers of the quality they expect.
This is provided for in Ordinance No. 2028-2015 approved by the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) early this month which seeks among others to institutionalize measures for the promotion and advancement of the bangus industry in Dagupan through branding, tagging, labeling and other means.
Prior to the enactment of the ordinance, Mayor Belen Fernandez tapped the Department of Trade and Industry and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) to help the city establlish the process for tagging Dagupan bangus.
The move was initiated by Fernandez after noting that many traders misrepresent bangus harvested from other places as Dagupan bangus.
The ordinance created the Bangus Industry Development Council (BIDC) to be composed of representatives from the government and the private sector and headed by the city mayor, to serve as a policy-making body for the promotion and advancement of the bangus industry in Dagupan.
The BIDC shall formulate guidelines for the branding of Dagupan bangus or milkfish and other Dagupan products, provide accreditation mechanism for local bangus growers, dealers and processors and revocation of the Certificate of Accreditation, including administrative penalties for the violation of the terms and conditions of the Certificate of Accreditation and any provision of the ordinance.
Tags and labels, costing P0.50, will be issued by the Bangus Industry Development Office (BIDO). (Leonardo Micua)
