THE drug syndicates again tried to be creative in peddling the illegal drug but the authorities were quick to catch on.

The new tact, was discovered by the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology’s (BJMP) District Jail in Dagupan that resulted in the filing of charges against the courier.

Dagupan police filed Wednesday a drugs case against a known gofer at the jail facility after a sachet of suspected shabu was found carefully hidden inside the dinuguan dish he had intended to deliver to an inmate facing drub charges, for dinner.

P/Superintendent Christopher Abrahano, city police chief, said suspect Raymond Untalan, 31, married, resident of Barangay Buenlag, Calasiao was charged with violation of Article II Section 11 of Republic Act 9165 at the City Prosecutor’s Office here.

Lawyer Kenneth Bid-ing, BJMP warden, said Untalan attempted to sneak in the sachet containing suspected shabu by hiding it under the black color of the pork’s blood of the dinuguan dish.

“The jail guard saw a chunk of cotton mixed with the viand that appeared to look like a chunk of meat. A closer scrutiny revealed that beneath it was a sachet of suspected shabu wrapped in an aluminum foil,” said Bid-ing.

He admitted the suspect frequents the facility and is known as a gofer for the inmates running errands and purchasing basic commodities for a fee.

Then he was caught bringing in rice and the dinuguan and other toiletries to a detainee.

Bid-ing said the seizure was a result of their thorough search and inspection policy of all items brought by all visitors. And, as part of security procedures inside the jail, the food were inspected in front of the suspect.

He added that they also have regular and surprise inspection to ensure no contraband items are sneaked inside the jail.

He said the discovery of dinuguan as cover for shabu was the first such modus operandi foiled in the BJMP.

Bid-ing warned visitors of BJMP “not to attempt to slip contraband items especially drugs, because instead of you visiting your relatives inside the jail, you will be the one that will be visited by your relatives inside the jaiI,” he said. (Tita Roces/Hilda Austria)
