Watch out for giant bagoong jar
LINGAYEN’S BAGOONG FESTIVAL
LINGAYEN—A giant bagoong (salted fish sauce/paste) jar will be unveiled here next year when this capital town of Pangasinan celebrates its Bagoong Festival.
Councilor Judy Ann Vargas, the festival chair, told local reporters during the KBP Forum that the jar measures 14 feet tall with 14 feet diameter.
Earthen jars are used here traditionally to produce the most delectable bagoong through fermentation, Vargas said.
The unveiling will be held on Jan. 24 at 2:00 p.m. at the town plaza and will eventually become the town’s landmark.
It will be followed by a boodle-fight among families and friends using bagoong as sawsawan (sauce for dipping).
Other activities lined up include a thanksgiving Mass on Jan. 22, a civic parade, coastal clean-up, group dance competition; and, on Jan. 23, a medical-dental mission, legal mission, street dancing competition and battle of the bands.
On Jan. 24, there will be a fun run, cooking demo, bagoong-making demo and other entertainment shows.
Vargas said bagoong-making is Lingayen’s One Town, One Product because the town’s bagoong is reputedly the best in the country, considered “export-quality.”
There are about 27 registered bagoong processors in the town’s Barangays Maniboc and Pangapisan Norte.
Vargas said next year’s Bagoong Festival will be celebrated separately from the town fiesta celebration for the first time, held annually every first Saturday and Sunday of January.
It was during the administration of the late Mayor Jonas Castañeda in 2011 when the first Bagoong Festival was staged. (Tita Roces)
