PHO issues guidelines for medical missions
LINGAYEN—The Provincial Health Office (PHO) will begin to require groups conducting medical missions to observe the guidelines it issued to ensure the comfort and safety of the intended beneficiaries.
Specifically, PHO now requires groups conducting surgical- medical -pediatric and dental missions to observe the Manual of Procedures (MOP) specified in the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 90001:2008.
Provincial Health Officer Dr. Anna Teresa de Guzman issued the guideline following a reported death of a senior citizen who underwent a medical procedure in a medical mission.
Although she did not describe the case, an Alfredo Lomibao, 61, of, Mangaldan was reported in local media to have died after he underwent medical procedure to remove a mass of tissue in his nape conducted by doctors in that medical mission in Calasiao.
PHO’s guidelines include the requirement that surgical cases be done in hospitals so that the protocol of aseptic technique or the conduct of the clinical procedure can be strictly observed and prevent infection or complication on the patient’s health.
It also requires patients that require surgical procedure to go through proper examination and processes.
It also stressed said medical, pediatric and dental missions should be done in a place with good ventilation and in a clean environment.
The new guideline requires the presence of licensed pharmacist in medical missions to dispense proper medicines based on doctors’ prescriptions and to ensure that the medicines are not expired.
The fourth guideline requires all medical-surgical missions to follow the regulations set by the Department of Health. (LVM)
