DASOL – This town will have nothing to do with mining and fish cages.

Mayor Noel Nacar of Dasol recently reiterated his stand against the two activities to protect the quality of the town’s salt produce.

He already rejected the call of the Department of Agriculture (DA) and the provincial government to put up fish cages in Dasol bay as part of agriculture development.

“We have an ordinance here banning fish cages in the bay to protect the main product and livelihood source of our people”, said Nacar.

Nacar added mine tailings flow to the sea where the salt, the source of the town’s main product, hence his opposition to the activity.

Dasol is known to produce the biggest volume of salt in the entire province of Pangasinan. Six out of 18 barangays are into salt-making.

“Salt is related to Pangasinan, to the very name of our province and its characteristics that’s why we wanted to maintain its quality and that our people will continue with salt-making even after this generation”, said Nacar.

The town is set to hold its first “Asin (salt) Festival” on February 17-21 next year to coincide with its town fiesta.

The festival will highlight the 101 uses of salt for industrial, human consumption and agriculture. (Hilda M. Austria)
