Early winners go for titles

DBC CHAMPIONSHIPS

JUDGE Jose de Venecia Sr. Memorial National High School (JJDVSMNHS), St Michael School by the Sea (SMSS), and Federico N. Ceralde Integrated School (FNCIS) thwarted their respective rivals in Game 1, last November 22 to gain psychological advantage to wrap up the championship title in Game 2 of their best-of-three title showdowns in the ongoing 20th Dagupan City Developmental Basketball Championships.

Battling for cage supremacy in the secondary level (girls division), JJDVSMNHS tripped PUI, 59-53 and is just a win shy of bagging the division title. In the same level, boys division 2, SMSS trounced La Marea Academy, 96-78 for 1-0 gain in their own series while in division 1, FNCIS drubbed Divine Word Academy of Dagupan (DWAD), 58-47 for a 1-0 lead.

Earlier in the day, results in knock-out games for third place in the same secondary level, girls division, showed SAGS besting St. John Cathedral School (SJCS), 42-29. In boys division 2, University of Luzon won by defaults over Pugaro Integrated School and was credited a score of 20-0; while in division 1, PUI edged LNU-FQDMF Special Science High School, 70-58.

Game 2 of the championship series in both levels is schedule on December 12, at the Peoples Astrodome and the pairs of teams seeing action on that day, starting at 8 a.m. are: Elementary, girls – PUI vs. West Central Elementary School; boys, division 2, SAGS vs. Lucao Elementary School; boys, division 1, SJCS vs. Dominican School. Secondary level, girls – JJDVSMNHS vs. PUI; boys, division 2, SMSS vs. La Marea; and, boys division 1, FNCIS vs. DWAD.

Game 3 in all the titular series, if necessary, will be played on December 13.

This year’s DBC tournament, also dubbed as the “Mayor Belen T. Fernandez Cup,” under the auspices of the Department of Education’s Division of City Schools, registered the most number of participating school teams from public and private elementary and secondary schools, in Dagupan City. – Philamer C.
