Dredging of Dagupan rivers stalled

MAYOR Belen Fernandez bewailed the snail-paced dredging of shallow rivers in Dagupan despite the presence of three dredging machines of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) for almost a year.

She told the program “Deretsahan” on Kabaleyan Channel of cable television USATV hosted by Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB) chairman Antonio Villar Jr. and Atty. Gonzalo Duque, that the three dredging machines have already been idle for months owing to failure of DPWH to supply fuel for the operations.

“I was told that the DPWH is still conducting the bidding of diesel fuel for the dredging machines but three months had passed and until now, the bidding is not finished ” Fernandez said.

She said the city government is ready to provide fuel in the interim but DPWH must guarantee to continue with the bidding of P3 million worth of fuel and commit to deliver the fuel to the dredging machines in Dagupan.

The DPWH reportedly announced it would set the bidding three months ago.

“We are worried that once we help, DPWH will no longer continue with the bidding and leave the full responsibility to the city,” Fernandez said.

She said the city already helped bankroll the fuel consumption in first month operation of the dredging machines in accordance with the memorandum of agreement signed by Fernandez with the DPWH flood control director.

It was the one-month fuel subsidy provided by the LGU that enabled the dredging machines to work sometime in June but stopped soon after the subsidy was exhausted. (LVM)
