Barangay OFW Migrant Desks organized in city
DAGUPAN City became the first local government unit in the region to create a Barangay OFW Migrant Desk following the Barangay OFW Migrant Desk Officers training and seminar held last week.
This was acknowledged by Rhoda Lee, officer-in-charge of PSD, Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) in Region 1.
The city’s barangay chairmen and together with their respective OFW (Overseas Filipino Workers) migrant desk officers attended the seminar-training.
The seminar was organized by Mayor Belen T. Fernandez to help ease problems of OFWs and their families if they should get into trouble while overseas.
“Dagupan is the first LGU in the region to have a Barangay Migrant Desk unlike in other places that created desks up to the municipal or city level only. We are happy that Mayor Belen has given her utmost concern in looking into the plights of our OFWs and their families,” said Lee.
She said she is confident that with the organization of the barangay OFW migrant desk, the city could fully protect the interests of OFWs and their families “especially when they run into trouble abroad,” Lee added.
Lee said that like Dagupan, OWWA’s ultimate goal is to extend assistance to OFWs that are suffering from the effects of migration in other countries.
She admitted since it will take time for the barangay OFW migrant desk officers to be familiar with the system, they can already make referrals to her office. (CIO)
