15 schools vie for title
SEAOIL-NBTC ELITE LEAGUE
FIFTEEN secondary school teams (boys) are competing in the local City Tournament of the Junior Regional Championships of the Seaoil-NBTC (National Basketball Training Center) Elite League, Season 2014-15, which started on November 21 at DWAD Gym with three teams, in contrasting triumphs registering their first wins in the early going.
In their initial games, Judge Jose de Venecia Sr. Memorial NHS (JJDVSMNHS) downed Mother Goose Special School Systems (MGSSS), 47-37; while Dagupan City NHS (DCNHS) devoured La Salette, 82-23; and, St. Albert the Great School (SAGS) devastated Bonuan Boquig NHS (BBNHS), 70-28.
The 15 teams participating in the tournament are divided into four groups – A, B, C, and D: the first three groups have four teams each while group D has three teams. Each group will play single round robin series in the elimination round. The top two placers in each group will advance to the quarterfinals where eight teams will be divided into two groups with four teams each: based on the elimination results, the top two in group A join the top two in group D and the top two teams in group B merge with the top two in group C.
The top two teams at the end of the quarterfinals will advance to the cross-over semi final round in which top team No. 1 of group A meets team No. 2 of Group B; and top team No. 1 of group B faces top team No. 2 of Group A. The winners in this round will play for the one-game championship.
Four games are slated today, starting at 8 a.m., Peoples Astrodome: St. Michael School by the Sea (SMSS) battles University of Luzon (ULHS); Divine Word Academy of Dagupan (DWAD) confronts MGSSS; Pangasinan Universal Institute (PUI) faces East Central Integrated School (ECIS); and, BBNHS engages Wonderland School.
The following teams will play on December 6, at 1 p.m.: SAGS vs. Wonderland; PUI vs. La Salette; DWAD vs. JJDVSMNHS; and ECIS vs. DCNHS. Sunday, December, starting at 8 a.m. – La Marea vs SMSS; LNU-FQDMFSSHS vs BBNHS; MGSSS vs Federico N. Ceralde Integrated School (FNCIS); and PUI vs DCNHS.
DepEd Education Supervisor Edilberto R. Abalos, Elite League city tournament commissioner clarified that only 15 schools have been listed after Ednas School’s entry was disapproved due to the failure of its team coach to attend the NBTC Coaches National Convention, in Manila, last September which was a basic pre-requisite for a school team to be eligible to join the tourney. – Philamer C.
