Standardization of Pangasinan Orthography sought
LINGAYEN– Anticipating the problems posed by the country’s new education policy requiring the use of the mother tongue as medium for instruction, a consensus was reached among educators from various educational institutions in the province, Pangasinan writers and commissioners of the Pangasinan Historical and Cultural Commission (PHCC) to update and standardize Pangasinan Orthography. “The standardization of guide to the usage of mother tongue in alphabet and orthography is a good pedagogical move to realize harmonization and bridging,” National Artist for Literature Virgilio Almario, Chairperson of Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF) stressed during a forum on Pangasinan Orthography on last week.
Pangasinan language is among the 19 mother tongues in the country approved by the Department of Education for the Mother Tongue Language – Based (MTLB Curriculum.

Almario pointed out that the standardization of orthography will address the confusion faced by school children in getting into MTLB Curriculum.
“Kapag hindi nagkaroon ng pagkakasundo sa pagtuturo pa lamang ng alpabeto sa mga bata sa wika na ginagamit sa K to 3, pagdating nila sa grade 4 mahaharap sila sa confusion,” he said.
The provincial government launched the “Primer for Pangasinan Ortography” in 2012 — the first in the country — but the KWF has suggested to update the guidelines of the orthography.
Eventual standardization, Almario emphasized, is needed to reach the intellectualization on modernization stage of a certain language.
The Pangasinan Orthography forum was also graced by: KWF Commissioner Purification De Lima, ASNA awardee for Literature Santiago Villafania, PHCC Commissioners Arabelle Arcinue, Elvira Estravo and Nida Vergara; and Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Escano, Chairperson of Solming Ed Pangasinan. (PIO-MGNO)
