‘Medikalinga sa Pangasinan’ launched

COJUANGCO UPDATES

ALAMINOS CITY— Former Pangasinan fifth district Rep. Mark Cojuangco has commenced on Monday his Medikalinga sa Pangasinan (Salun-at Ti Umili) that started with a surgical mission.

The first day of the medical safari, 29 residents of Victory, Bolinao underwent minor surgical procedures, including several boys who were circumcised.  Metro Manila-based doctors were tapped to provide medial assistance with the help of at least 10 local nurses.

Cojuangco said there are two surgical teams from Manila who are performing the surgeries like removal of cysts, goiter, hemorrhoids and hernia; circumcision, mastectomy, hysterectomy and even vasectomy.

“We were expecting around 2,000 patients for a ten-day mission. But since more than 4,000 were listed so this could take up to three weeks to finish,” Cojuangco said.

Cojuangco said he feels for poor residents of far-flung villages who are handicapped by poverty.

“Minor surgeries cost around P2,000 while major surgeries cost something like P50,000 which are really beyond the reach of poor people, so they would postpone seeking medical attention until the case worsens, and some times it is already too late,” Cojuangco said.

He said a free surgery has a big impact on the family.

While there are medical-surgical missions conducted by other groups, the residents of remote villages are not informed and most medical missions are held only one day in a specific area.

In contrast, Cojuangco’s medical and surgical missions require Barangay Health Workers to look for residents who need medical operations but could not afford it.

Vehicles are provided to ferry the patients to-and from their homes to clinic. Take-home medicines are provided patients until their wounds are healed.

He said the patients who need to be confined in a hospital facility will be taken to a hospital in nearby Zambales province, “with all expenses paid.”

The mission will be brought to all the six districts of Pangasinan, Cojuangco said.
