Jail detainees earn degree in accounting
TWENTY-EIGHT detainees at the Dagupan City District Jail in Bonuan Gueset received their diplomas in Business and Information Management in a simple graduation ceremony at the Multi-Purpose Hall on October 21 under the College in Jail (CIJ) program of the Asian Institute of E-Commerce International (AIE).
Jail Chief Inspector Lawyer Kenneth A. Bid-ing, jail warden), said this is the first batch of inmates that enrolled and completed the CIJ in partnership with AIE.
He said another program will be conducted by AIE International if there will be enough inmates that will enroll.
Mayor Belen T. Fernandez, represented by her executive assistant Dr. Edwin Aguirre, was the commencement speaker. Citing the accomplishment of the first batch of graduates under the program, she encouraged the graduates to inspire other inmates in making their time productive while inside the facility by earning a degree in college.
AIE President and Chairman of the Board of Directors Dr. Aveleo Q. Fuentes said the ‘College in Jail Program’ is the school’s off-campus advocacy program to help inmates attain a brighter future. He said the second batch of students will start classes in July next year.
Vanessa F. Siapno, one of the inmate-graduates, said she was grateful for the opportunity to earn a degree even while inside the facility.
Bid-ing thanked AIE for the program that prepared the graduates for a new life once they regain their freedom. (CIO-Joseph C. Bacani)
