CAYETANO’S PROJECT STATUS CHANGE

SUDENT activism is well and alive…into cyberspace.

Student leaders from various colleges and universities in Pangasinan are set to meet with their counterparts in other provinces next week to discuss their own plans in engaging there peers and their respective communities on issues that affect and involve them.

A leadership summit, Project Status Change, will be held at the Sison Auditorium in Lingayen, on September 19, has been organized under the auspices of Senate Majority Leader Alan Peter SW. Cayetano.

TV director-turned-Congressman Lino Cayetano will deliver the keynote talk in the morning and the rest of the day will feature team-building activities, a plenary session, and workshop group discussions on youth issues for social change.

LINO CAYETANOCayetano, an advocate of youth welfare and development, said the program is anchored on the idea that young Filipinos are crucial in attaining the much-needed reforms in the country, hence, should be given all the resources and support they need.

“Project Status Change aims to fill in the gap between ideas and initiatives. It is designed to develop the participants’ confidence and leadership skills, to encourage creative thinking for new and innovative solutions, and to inspire fervent commitment to the cause of advancing the welfare of their communities through principled, solutions-based, and participative leadership,” he said.

A notable activity of the summit will be the idea-pitch workshop wherein participants work in groups to craft action plans embodying their visions and goals for their respective communities. Each group will then present their ideas before a panel of judges. The best youth action plan will be awarded a small grant to start their community project under the technical supervision of the organizers.

“The student leaders who will have the best ideas will be able to turn these ideas into actual projects. There shall be regular communication among the organizers, the winning groups, and the participants to ensure continuity and sustainability of the ‘change’ that we will to introduce into the lives of these young leaders,” Cayetano assured.

Since young Filipinos are heavily engaged in social media nowadays, the summit incorporates discussion on the use of social media into Project Status Change’s overall approach. A special group composed of 50 youth leaders based on their social media index will be asked to participate in online discussions and brainstorming.

“The cyberspace is currently the best venue to start social conversations and we hope to showcase the involvement of young Filipinos on social media. So we planned to incorporate this into our project. After the event, all participants will be invited to join an online community of change-makers where resources, tools, and information will be shared between and among the members,” Cayetano added.

“We believe that this project will encourage the youth to continuously and actively take part in nation-building. It literally wants to change the youth’s status from being passive to active, from being mere observers to actual participants for social change,” he added.
