DOH cites Pangasinan immunization efforts, ranks 5th
THE efforts of the provincial government paid off in expediting the mass immunization of children in the province. Pangasinan, now ranks fifth in the country for the most number of children immunized in the country.
This was disclosed by Department of Health Assistant Secretary Enrique Tayag during his visit in the province last week for the agency’s ongoing “Ligtas sa Tigdas” campaign this month.
“The province of Pangasinan is one of the top performers in the mass immunization campaign,” said Tayag.
As of September 15, the provincial government has succeeded in immunizing some 146, 651children ages nine months old to 59 months old with measles-rubella (MR) and 166, 946 children ages zero to 59 months old immunized with oral polio vaccine (OPV).
Dagupan, along with the Urdaneta City and San Carlos City, are among the top three in the province in terms of number of children immunized with the MR and OPV vaccine.
In Dagupan, as of September 17, the City Health Office (CHO) has already provided 14,168 MR vaccines which comprises 68.55% of the targeted 20,664 to be immunized.
Mayor Belen T. Fernandez had called on the local health community to intensify its directive against measles and polio, and to ensure that no child should get sick from vaccine-preventable diseases.
The DOH spokesperson also debunked myths regarding vaccines, which seek to strengthen a child’s immune system against diseases.
“Those who have been given the first dose of the vaccine should not be worried of overdosage once they receive the second dose,” said Tayag.
He added that it is safe for the children to be vaccinated even if they have fever and colds except when they were hospitalized or just recently discharge from a hospital.
Tayag, who is known for his dance routines that raise awareness on public health issues, also led participants in a dance number to promote the healthy lifestyle initiative. (Hilda M. Austria/PIO/CIO)
