SPAIN-trained, Dagupan City-based Edilyn Balanga eked out a 6-4, 6-4 win over upcoming Maia Balce in the semifinal but failed to hold on in the championship round, to place second only to Philippine teenage sensation Khim Iglupas in the annual Olivares Cup Open Tennis Championship held at Olivares Sports Center in Sucat, Parañaque over the weekend.

The second seeded Balanga, 26, after losing a heartbreaking 6-7 score in the opening set, hung tough in the second canto to win 6-4, but was unable to foil her rival in the third and final set yielding a 6-4 decision to the third seeded 16 year-old Iligan City native Iglupas.

Aglupas eventually eased out a stunning upset over the top seeded bet and multi-titled Clarice Patrimonio in the semis.

The Arellano Street resident Balanga, is the second of four children of Eddie Balanga of Binalonan and Vicky Margate of Mangatarem, Pangasinan. The tilt was sanctioned by Philippine Tennis Association headed by president and Parañaque Mayor Edwin Olivares. (JAG, Jr.)
