THE Government Internship Program (GIP) is working for the daily operations of Dagupan City.

This was affirmed by Atty. Farah Marie Decano, Dagupan’s city administrator, when she met with Department of Labor and Employment-Regional Office 1 Director Grace Ursua.

To date, 40 tech-voc graduates and college undergraduates are assigned at the Dagupan City Hall to provide clerical support to its different departments.

She cited the work of Rodolfo Servito Tamayo, Jr., 24, an accountancy undergraduate, has been assigned at the Mayor’s Office since June 16 as an example.   He does encoding of contracts and job orders, filing of documents, answering phone calls and attending to clients with minimal supervision and even takes charge if his direct supervisor is not around.

“I am indeed thankful to the DOLE for the opportunity to serve, to work, enhance my abilities and earn for my schooling,” Rodolfo said.

Jojo shared that in a little over two months, he has developed hard work, self-confidence, patience, communication skills and interpersonal skills.

Cristine Joy Alap, 22, a holder of a Caregiving National Certificate II and a BS Nutrition and Dietetics undergraduate assigned at the One-Stop Business Center (OSBC), has shown similar competence and efficiency.

Randolf Perez Ubando, the Head of the OSBC, said Cristine displays remarkable efficiency and effectiveness in the performance of her functions here at the OSBC.”

Noting the program’s benefits, Decano said the GIP should be made a regular or continuing program of the government.

Ursua said the GIP provides opportunities for the youth who are at least high school or voc-tech graduate to experience and appreciate public service.

In Region 1, a total of 1,589 interns are currently working, with 773, or 49% assigned in Pangasinan. (CIO-Arly S. Valdez)
