Capitol holds 1st Pangasinan Tourism Summit
LINGAYEN—The provincial government organized its First Tourism Summit and Skills Competition in a bid to make the province one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country.
Governor Amado Espino Jr. set the tone of the event by stressing that the competition is anchored on the premise that the “most important asset of the province is its human resource.”
Hundreds of tourism students representing 22 schools in the province took part in the series of competitions, i.e., napkin folding, table setting, cookery, table skirting, fruit and vegetable carving, bartending and flairtending.
“We want to equip our tourism at vocational students with proper skills in order to make them globally competitive,” said provincial tourism officer Ma. Luisa Elduayan.
Espino also urged tourism establishments to continue improving their basic facilities, particularly comfort rooms just like how the provincial government has been improving the access to new tourist destinations like Balungao, Mangatarem, Anda, and Dasol.
“Let’s start with tasks we can easily accomplish begin to do more,” he said.
Meanwhile, Pangasinan remains the top province in the region in tourist arrivals.
Thus was disclosed by Department of Tourism (DOT) Region 1 Director Martin Valera during the summit and added that the province has a big potential to become the food supplier, educational center, and top beach destination in the north.
The provincial government is encouraging hotels, hostels and inns to apply for Department of Tourism accreditation as mandated by Tourism Act of 2009. (Johanne R. Macob/PNA)
