Governor Amado T. Espino, Jr. led the blessing and inauguration of the new OPD-Administrative building of the Western Pangasinan District Hospital (WPDH) in Alaminos City last August 26 which will house the hospital’s out-patient department and administrative office.

The governor said the facility will realize his goal of rebuilding and upgrading WPDH.

“We still have few more things to do for the hospital like the renovation of the old administrative building and convert it into a ward that will accommodate around 60 beds,” the governor said, adding that the road network in the hospital compound will also be constructed.

The governor recalled the bad condition of the hospital’s facilities in his first days in office in July 2007.

“Noon halos walang gustong magpaospital dito kasi mabaho, marumi at sira-sira ang building. This hospital was in complete disarray that time,” he said as he added that his administration started to work on minor repairs for the hospital after two months of his first term.

With the new improvements in place, the WPDH has applied for a Level 2 classification to provide better health services to the people from the whole first congressional district and even from other nearby towns.

The provincial board recently ratified Provincial Resolution No. 718-2014 endorsing to the Department of Health the application to operate a 150-bed capacity of the WPDH from 75-bed capacity.

Dr. Susan Rita Merino, WPDH chief, said that the present administration has endeavored to upgrade the hospital to further increase its bed capacity.

“From 75 we now have an average of about 130 per day.” She said.

Meanwhile, Dr. Anna Maria Teresa De Guzman, Provincial Health Officer, said the remarkable accomplishment of Pangasinan in terms of health reform has become an example among other provinces in the country.

“Hindi lang ang Cebu ang nag-benchmark ng health services natin kundi pati na rin ang Oriental Mindoro,” the PHO chief revealed as she said that no-less than Gov. Alfonso Umali, Jr. who heads the League of Provinces will visit Pangasinan next month to observe Pangasinan’s best health practices.

All 14 hospitals in the province have undergone major restructuring since 2007 to realize the present administration’s thrust to make Pangasinan the ‘home of the healthiest Filipinos.’

Also present during the inauguration were the barangay captains from Alamino City’s 39 barangays. /RRB
