AFTER decades of darkness without access to electricity, some 390 households in a remote part of Infanta town will finally be lighted up and energized, thanks to a program jointly supported by the Department of Energy  (DOE) and TeaM Energy Corporation–through its social responsibility arm TeaM Energy Foundation Inc (TEFI).

The program described in a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) that DOE and the TEFI signed commits to provide Solar Home Systems (SHS) to select homes in off-grid areas.

The Pangasinan Electric Cooperative I, which is also a signatory to the MOA, will help energize the households in Barangays Pita and Babuyan in the said municipality.

Three hundred ninety units of 30 watt-peak photovoltaic SHS that can power up to four LED lights will be distributed to the residents by the end of the year. The SHS also has a digital AM/FM radio and a provision for an MP3 player and cellphone chargers.

In addition, two 75 watt-peak solar home systems and four units of solar street lights will be installed in the barangays’ barangay hall and health center.

Present at the MOA signing were DOE Secretary Carlos Jericho Petilla, DOE Undersecretary Donato Marcos, and TeaM Energy President and CEO Federico Puno. Also present to witness the signing were members of the TEFI Board of Trustees and the partner beneficiaries from Barangays Pita and Babuyan.

One of TeaM Energy’s objectives is to help government energize far-flung areas that do not have access to electricity, said Ricky De Castro, TEFI executive director, in order to promote local economic activity and pave the way for development to take place.

The delivery, installation and commissioning of the solar home systems in Infanta, is set in December 2014 to January 2015 while the community organizing will take place in June to November next year.

TeaM Energy, a partnership between Tokyo Electric Power Company and Marubeni Corporation, is one of the largest Independent Power Producers (IPP) in the country with over 2,000 megawatts (MW) of installed generating capacity in Luzon.

TeaM Energy operates two clean coal facilities: the 735 MW Pagbilao Power Station in Quezon Province and the 1218 MW Sual Power Station in Pangasinan. It also has a 20 per cent stake in the Ilijan natural gas project in Batangas. (Tita Roces)
