TO EMPOWER EDUCATORS IN ICT

SMART City, here we come!

The Department of Education (DepEd) schools division has began implementing a technology plan program in support to the vision of the city government to make Dagupan City a “smart city” by 2016.

The tech plan program formulated by Gloria Torres, schools division superintendent together with the information technology department of DepEd Dagupan, already piloted the learning management system (LMS) at the Dagupan City National High School (DCNHS) where its phase one is already implemented.

“We, as educators, are migrants to technology while the students are natives, hence, the need for our teachers to adapt” she said pointing out that teachers should already make use of technology in educating their students, making the lessons more exciting since students could already get bored with the traditional way of teaching.

LMS is a web-based technology that enable teachers to provide lessons and monitor students through the web while the students can also interact with the lessons in threaded conversation or discussion

Then Google Southeast Asia included DepEd Dagupan as one of the pilot schools in northern Luzon for their Google Educators Group (GEG) by providing free web hosting and domain to five high schools and three integrated schools in the city while the schools provide their own website designs and format.

Among the chosen schools are: DCNHS, Bonuan Boquig National High School, Federico Ceralde Integrated School, Carael High School, Salapingao High School, Pugaro High School, Judge Jose De Venecia Senior Memorial National High School and East Central Integrated School.

“The division gave the guidelines for the format and contents of each websites”, said Reynan Infante, officer-in-charge IT Officer 1, the community manager.

Google will also host a free teacher’s workshop on August 15 to some 120 teachers in Dagupan and interested teachers in the province. Teachers who are interested to join may check out the details at GEG Phils’ Facebook account.

The workshop will equip teachers with knowledge on the use of Google or IT capacity development. An inaugural event will be held on August 14 with the Google Southeast Asia team.

Meanwhile, a mobile application, a thesis project of IT students of the University of Pangasinan (UPang Phinma), designed as a midget version of the DepEd Dagupan’s website will soon be available.

Torres said the end goal of the tech plan is to make teachers and students contributors to the internet and not just users of technology.

Mayor Belen Fernandez vowed to support the tech plan of DepEd by allocating funds for the projects in the 2015 budget. (Hilda M. Austria)
