Consumers advised not to accept candies
ONLY EXACT CHANGE, PLEASE
ROSALES—Here’s a warning from the regional director of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to stores that give candies instead of exact change.
Erring establishments, depending on their level, would be fined a minimum of P5,000.
Regional director Florante Leal warned that it is an unfair practice that shortchanges customers.
He said it is prohibited for a buyer be given candy instead of an exact change because that would make it appear that the amount the customer is being made to pay more than what the price tag of the purchased item.
Real lamented that it is the tolerant attitude of Filipinos to ignore such abusive trade practices which is why he said his office is exposing children to consumer issues, explaining their rights as consumers.
“If it destroys their health, if it’ s mislabeled, if it is underweight, they have the right to complain and demand for the value of their item purchased,” he added.
If the store does not have a consumer welfare desk, people could go directly to the DTI, he said. (Tita Roces)
