TO CONTAIN SOIL EROSION

BUGALLON—Flash floods have begun to threaten parts of the town with serious soil erosion prompting the local government to resort to sandbagging.

Already, some 2,000 sand bags have been positioned near Dumoloc Dam in barangays Umanday and Bolaoen last August 5.

Town mayor Jumel Anthony Espino, who led the sandbagging, said that sandbagging will slow down soil erosion affecting the farm irrigation of three villages: Umanday, Bolaoen, Cayanga.

Espino said the sandbagging is just a makeshift solution and that the municipal government in partnership with the provincial government is preparing for a full rip rapping of the area, to be implemented “hopefully this year.”

The five-hour massive sandbagging activity which started at 8 a.m. was participated in by the municipal government and some 200 barangay folks in the area.

Meanwhile, the geohazard mapping in the town has identified flash flood-prone barangays namely Hacienda, Portic, Laguit Padilla, Laguit Centro, Cayanga, Salomague Norte, Salomague Sur, Umanday, Bolaoen, and Cabayaoasan.

Aquino said barangay disaster and risk reduction management councils have been established with trained personnel in the said identified villages. (Johanne R. Macob)
