LINGAYEN—It didn’t take long for eight members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) to declare their support for the announced gubernatorial bid of their colleague, Board Member Amado ‘Pogi’ Espino III, in the May 2016 elections after his father, Gov. Amado T. Espino, Jr. announced it.

On Monday (August 4) Sixth District Board Member Alfonso Bince Jr. read the group’s “Manifestation of Commitment for Unqualified and Voluntary Support” for BM Espino.

Joining Bince (independent) in the manifesto were Raul Sison (independent), Nestor Reyes (NP), Generoso Tulagan Jr. (LP), Liberato Villegas (LP), Danilo Uy (Independent), Angel Baniqued Jr. (independent), and Sheila Marie Galicia (NPC).

The group said the young Espino embodied the qualities and values of a leader to succeed the governor citing the need to sustain the latter’s “unparalleled successes” in different fields of governance.

“It is imperative that the benefits now being enjoyed by the Pangasinenses are pursued and continued by someone who has the same attributes as Gov. Amado Espino Jr. in terms of dedication, hard work, and political will… with the additional virtues of humility, steadfastness, and simplicity,” the manifesto read.

BM Espino was a three-term mayor of Bautista and presently president of the Liga ng mga Barangay federation.

Last week, Gov. Espino announced the plans of his son to run in 2016 as candidate for the gubernatorial post.

However, Bince clarified in an interview that their decision to support BM Espino’s aspiration was made even before the governor’s surprise announcement and making their support public was merely in reaction to former congressman Mark Cojuangco’s early announcement as a candidate for the post.

“The issues have been joined, former congressman Mark Cojuangco started it, so as far as we are concerned, the Sangguniang Panlalawigan will pick up the challenge,” he said as he added that the group’s own announcement will not distract them from their work.

Earlier, nine mayors in the first district declared their support to Cojuangco.

In a separate interview, even as BM Espino expressed his “heartfelt gratitude” to his father and his colleagues for their support, he said, “We still have 21 months before May 2016, bayaan niyo po muna akong mapalakas ang Liga ng mga Barangay, ‘yon naman po ang trabaho ko and in respect to Governor Espino, may dalawang taon pa syang pagsisilbihan ang probinsya ng Pangasinan.(Johanne R.
