THE Developmental Basketball League (DBL), now also known as Mayor Belen Cup, is perhaps now considered the biggest local basketball league in the Pangasinan.

Seventy-seven teams from the different public and private schools in both elementary and secondary trooped to the Dagupan Astrodome last Friday to compete in the 20thDevelopmental Basketball League -2ndMayor Belen’s Cup 2014.

Edilberto Abalos, education supervisor of the Department of Education (DepEd) Dagupan City said that the increasing number of schools joining DBL proves the success and attraction that the league provides.

DBL was started on 1995 initially with nine teams. Last year, the field ballooned to 52 teams. This year varied teams from 33 elementary public and private schools and 44 secondary public and private schools in the city are competing.

“This is an avenue for our students to develop their skills in basketball and their character while having fun outside their classrooms”, said Abalos. “It is also a way to build friendship among schools, although this is a competition, it is a touted as a friendly competition.”

Aside from basketball, representatives from each school contended for Mr. and Ms. DBL 2014 and the modern hip-hop dance competition.

Dr. Lourdes Servito, assistant schools division superintendent of DepEd Dagupan City urged the players to promote sportsmanship, persevere in their passion, instill respect for rules, enthusiasm for teamwork and spirit of friendship, or the acronym SPORTS for short.

Mayor Belen Fernandez was represented in the opening ceremonies by City Administrator Atty. Farah Decano.

“We thank the schools, teachers and the parents for allowing their children to extend school involvement in our league on weekends”, said Abalos. (Hilda Martin Austria/PNA)
