BUGALLON—Criminals are now finding Pangasinan a dangerous place to live in.

A still unidentified suspect who eluded a checkpoint found this out too late when he was killed in a shootout with responding police officers last Thursday night.

But the shootout also resulted in the wounding of two children who were caught in the crossfire.

The Toyota Tamaraw FX that the suspect and an undetermined number of suspects rode in was initially intercepted by the Bugallon policemen at a checkpoint in front of the municipal hall.  But instead of stopping, it sped off prompting the policemen to give chase in their mobile patrol.

In a report filed by P/Sr. Supt. Sterling Raymund Blanco, officer-in-charge police director, one of the van’s passengers lobbed a hand grenade at the pursuing police car that was closing in on them in barangay Salumague Bugallon, resulting in the wounding of SPO2 Ryan Cano of the Bugallon Police Station inside the car.

Cano was rushed to a nearby hospital due to shrapnel wound at the back of his head.

Hot pursuit operation around 1:30 a.m. Friday, July 18 by joint elements from Mangatarem, Bugallon, Special Weapons and Tactics of Pangasinan Provincial Police Office finally tracked down the vehicle in Barangay Ponglo Baleg in Mangatarem.

A shootout ensued after the suspects fired at the policemen who were conducting a verification on the van with plate number UKR 716.

Two minors found in the house that the remaining suspect used as human shield were wounded in the crossfire.

The wounded minors, aged 12 and 13, are reportedly children of former Municipal Councilor Raymundo Cruz whose house was used by the suspects to hide. They were brought to nearby hospital for medical treatment

The slain suspect reportedly was about to throw another grenade at the policemen when he was shot that led to his death.

The identity of the slain suspect is still being established by the police.

Meanwhile the vehicle owner was identified as Maieng Abdulazis, single, businessman and resident of Barangay Arellano of this town who is facing criminal case for frustrated murder and presently on bail.

Blanco said investigators recovered shabu of undetermined weight from the possession of the slain suspect.

Asked why the suspects sped off their vehicle during the checkpoint, Blanco said, “Maybe because of the explosives (grenades) they were carrying”.

Blanco said that as of noontime Friday, the father of the two minors has not surfaced and the identities of the other companions of the slain suspect who managed to escape during the chase have yet to be determined.  Blanco added.–Tita Roces and Hilda M. Austria)
