“THEY will support us!”

This was the update given by an upbeat Mayor Belen T. Fernandez to her department heads on the results of her meetings with various groups of Dagupeños in the United States during the first teleconference held during the regular weekly executive session.

Fernandez said various Pangasinan and Dagupeño associations she met in California have assured her their support to export the Dagupan bangus to the United States.

Using Skype, a voice-over-the-internet-protocol application, the mayor and the department heads led by City Administrator Farah Decano managed to exchange updates on real time.

“I am happy and excited because the Pangasinan and Dagupan associations have assured me of their help particularly some logistics for the export of the Dagupan bangus initially to the mainland,” she said.

The mayor added that Filipinos she met indicated to her that they are excited to finally be able to buy genuine Dagupan bangus in local stores.

They told her that several stores claim to be selling Dagupan bangus but they doubt the claims.

“Excited na silang lahat sa pagdating ng original Dagupan bangus,” the mayor quipped.

She said a meeting with Mayor Jose Esteves of Milpitas City had been set to discuss about the student exchange program and the renewal of sister city agreement between Dagupan and Milpitas.

She was informed that a possibility of expanding the student exchange program in partnership with the Lion’s Club is in the offing.

In one forum with overseas Dagupeños, the computerization of real property tax base in the city was broached. Citing the success of the system being used in Milpitas, such a system, they said, will enable to update their tax obligations in the Dagupan. (CIO/Leziel C. Aquino)
