At last, farmers are earning more

DAGUPAN CITY—First the bad news. Rice prices have soared. Now the good news – farmers are earning an all-time high for their palay!

The data from the Bureau of Agricultural Statistic show that the buying price in April 2014 for palay reached P25 per kilogram, a P9 increase from last year’s average selling price of P16.37 a kilo.

When the National Food Authority set the high selling price, the traders offered a higher price in order to corner their usual stock, anticipating the lean season in the months of June to September.

“Farmers have benefited and earned from the high selling price of palay in the last harvest season,” Provincial Agriculturist Dalisay Moya said during the KBP Forum last Thursday.

The high buying price for farmers supports the provincial government’s strategy in maintaining food security.

“The provincial government is exerting all efforts to ensure that food production is sustained and food is readily available at an affordable price,” she said.

Gov. Amado Espino Jr. earlier distributed farm inputs to farmers including seeds, farm equipment, and monetary capital to aid farmers in their production. –PIA/Pangasinan.
