THE 1,200 megawatt Sual Coal-Fired Power Plant in Pangasinan resorted to an emergency shutdown of its unit one after a leak was found in its boiler tube last Friday.

Greggy Romualdez, head of the external affairs of team energy Sual Power Corporation (SPC) which operates the plant, disclosed that the unit was originally scheduled for plain shutdown on June 23 for maintenance.

However the leak in the boiler tube was discovered last Friday.

Romualdez admitted that it will take few days before this can be restored and operational.

He said it will take one day to cool down the boiler and only then can they do a repair to restore it to operational level.

Meanwhile, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) assured there will be no brown-outs on account of the shutdown because there is sufficiency supply available to service its customers.

“The supply of electricity is sufficient as we still have a reserve,” said Nelson Bautista, supervisor of NGCP Pangasinan.

He pointed out that as of Friday, there was still electricity reserve of 8, 614 megawatts with its peak at 7, 920 megawatts.

“Nothing to worry about”, Romualdez said. (Hilda M. Austria)
