LINGAYEN—The police can and should do more for crime prevention and solution of crimes in the province.

This was the call of Second District Congressman Leopoldo Bataoil as he urged the authorities to intensify their operations, in response to recent high profile crime incidents in the province, the mot recent of which was the murder of Urbiztondo mayor Ernesto Balolong Jr.

In his press statement, Bataoil said the PNP should operate more checkpoints and choke points, raids and searches to assure high police visibility and to update their threat assessments and order of battle or watch list.

He added that the higher command must also provide augmentation to the local police.

Bataoil, a former police director of Region 1 said these are “part of the tried and tested Three-Tiered Defense System (TDS) against high profile crimes such as assassination, terrorism, kidnapping, robbery in band and others.”

The three TDS he referred to are intelligence operations, target hardening, and crisis management.

The lawmaker also expressed his opposition to the suspension of Permit to Carry Firearms Outside Residence (PTCFOR) in the province saying is not a guarantee to lower crimes “because the criminal elements can take advantage of the vulnerability of the legitimate firearms holders.”

“The challenge lies now on the part of the PNP to ensure the safety and security of those legitimate firearms holders who will abide by the suspension of PTCFOR against possible threats,” he concluded.- Johanne R. Macob
