LINGAYEN– Heightened operations against illegal drugs in the province resulted in more than a hundred percent increase in the total volume seized for the first five months of 2014 compared to the same period last year.

In his presentation before the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) during the board’s June 16 regular session, Region 1 Director Adrian Alvariño of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), disclosed that the total seizure of shabu has reached 607.29 grams compared to 292 grams during the period in review, the highest in the region.

The confiscated shabu from January to May this year is estimated to be worth P3 million.

“Of the said 607 grams of shabu, 280 grams were seized through PDEA operations, and the rest were from the PNP,” Alvariño said.

He added that the illegal drug capture in Pangasinan constituted the highest percentage at 72.50% of the total 837.59 grams in the four provinces in the region.

Alvariño also reported that 166 anti-drug operations were conducted in the province and among the areas targeted were Asingan and Lingayen.

He informed the board that ten PDEA agents are assigned to operate in Pangasinan, and therefore, the province with the most number of agents.

Meanwhile, the SP announced that it intends to pass a provincial resolution that will strengthen the anti-drug abuse council at the grassroots level.–Johanne R. Macob  with report from PIO
